Kingston Community Land Trust

Nonprofit

The goal of a community land trust is to acquire property, and provide affordable housing for the community in which they are established. We do that by pooling, grants, donations, and private loans to buy residential buildings at market value and hold them in a trust for the long term benefit of the community. The long term community benefit is secured through land lease agreements and democratic governance of the Land Trust as a non-profit. Think of it like a co-op for the entire City of Kingston. A co-op that you are entitled to membership in by virtue of being someone who lives, or works in the City of Kingston. Members vote on the election of board members, acquisitions, allocation of funds, and the initiation of community projects. The community land trust model is flexible meaning that we can mold it to bring the largest benefit to the Kingston community. Whether we want to provide affordable high-quality rentals to the students and low income residents of the City, or open up new avenues to homeownership in the City the community land trust model has been proven to reduce the cost of housing in the areas they operate in. We are still in the startup phase, so if you are interested in helping craft the vision and path of this new not-for-profit reach out! Kingston Fall Fair

The Kingston Fall Fair is hosted by the Kingston & District Agricultural Society for over 200 years, making it one of Kingston's longest running events! The fair takes place September 17 - 20 at the Kingston Memorial Centre, 303 York Street. This event includes livestock and heritage skills competitions, 4-H achievement days, horse shows, the Country Singing Showdown, a huge midway, demolition derbies, monster trucks and more. We appreciate all the help we can get to make this a memorable event for more than 25,000 people who attend each year. We strive to offer a fun and educational experience for the whole family, to help connect urban and rural residents, and increase awareness of agriculture in our region.

Ryandale Transitional Housing

Ryandale provides a sober living space for homeless men. It does not discriminate against past drug use, mental illness or time spent in prison. Residents spend up to one year learning life skills, healing from trauma and/or addiction and overcoming the obstacles that led them to become homeless. With Ryandale’s help, people can reduce their risk of relapsing and improve their chances of staying housed.

Agnes Etherington Art Centre

Situated within territories of the Anishinaabe, Haudenosaunee and Huron-Wendat, the Agnes Etherington Art Centre is a curatorially-driven and research-intensive professional art centre that proudly serves a dual mandate as a leading, internationally recognized public art gallery and as an active pedagogical resource at Queen’s University in Kingston. By commissioning, researching, collecting and stewarding works of art, and by exhibiting and interpreting visual culture through an intersectional lens, Agnes creates opportunities for participation and exchange across communities, cultures, histories and geographies. Its collections—numbering over 17,000 works—include cutting-edge contemporary art and fine examples of Canadian historical art, Indigenous art and historicized ancestors, and material culture including the Collection of Canadian Dress and the Lang Collection of African Art. The Bader Collection, comprising over 500 works with a focus on seventeenth-century Dutch and Flemish painting, includes one portrait and three exquisite character studies by Rembrandt. Agnes is committed to anti-racism. We work to eradicate institutional biases and develop accountable programs that support and centre the artistic expression and lived experience of Black, Indigenous and People of Colour. Agnes promotes 2SLGBTQIAP+ positive spaces. Admission is free and everyone is welcome.

Zero Food Waste nonprofit is a Canadian wide nonprofit dedicated to promoting sustainability and reducing food waste in our community. Through Queen's students, the zero food waste initiative has spread to Kingston. Our is to create a more resilient and environmentally conscious Kingston by connecting local food businesses, residents, and organizations to minimize waste! We operate through various initiatives, including food recovery programs and community outreach. Our food recovery efforts involve collecting surplus food from local businesses and redistributing it to local charities and food banks in need, ensuring that no food goes to waste. By raising awareness about the environmental impacts of food waste, we aim to inspire a culture of sustainability in Kingston. Join us in our commitment to creating a healthier, more sustainable community, where every bite counts!!

Kingston Animal Rescue

Founded in 2010, Kingston Animal Rescue is a no-kill animal rescue group. We rescue and find forever homes for animals in need. We are a registered charity. (83024 4802 RR0001). Using a network of foster homes, we take in last chance animals - animals that are at high risk of euthanasia or those that would otherwise be at risk without our help. This includes animals at shelters and stray animals. We also assist in emergency rescues, including small animals removed from neglectful situations. As a no-kill rescue, our animals stay in foster homes until they are adopted. We work to educate the public about the proper care and treatment of animals as well as the pet overpopulation crisis and the importance of spaying/neutering and adoption.

KIMRI Who We Are Foundations: Then and Now - Then: KIMRI was formed by a young black Muslim and an older white Christian. When their academic backgrounds and experience converged, they had many discussions around racism in Kingston. At this intersection of their lives, they concluded that a more expansive approach would be more effective in resolving long standing social problems, since existing initiatives tended to focus on particular groups and a holistic take would engage the whole community. - Now: Kingston Institute for Multi-Racial Inclusion (KIMRI) is an incorporated non-profit social enterprise. Through substantive conversation, we address deep seated challenges related to equity, diversity, inclusion and Indigenization (EDII.) A dedicated board of directors collaborates with various laudable initiatives to create meaningful change.
